Lancaster Co. Sued Over Dropping Ballot Dropbox

The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania is suing Lancaster County after two Republican commissioners who also serve on the Board of Elections voted last month to remove the county’s only ballot dropbox. Lancaster Online reports that the dropbox for mail and absentee ballots, located in the County Government Center in downtown Lancaster, had been in use for every election since 2020. The ACLU filed the suit on behalf of two county residents who say the commissioners did not properly notify the public in advance that they would be considering this issue, as required by the state’s Sunshine Act. President Commissioner Ray D’Agostino says the matter was discussed at multiple public meetings. Dropboxes are not mentioned in the Pennsylvania Election Code. The state’s primary is next Tuesday.
