Today is when counties in Pennsylvania are required to report results from last week’s primary, but one race is still undecided. In the GOP Senate nomination contest, candidate celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz leads former hedge fund CEO David McCormick by 992-votes out of more than 830,000 cast between the two. On Monday, McCormick sued in Commonwealth Court to ask that counties obey a brand-new federal appeals court decision that could help him close the gap. That earlier decision allowed a county to count mail-in ballots that lack a required handwritten date on the return envelope. McCormick’s campaign says at least two counties, Blair and Allegheny, suggested they would not count those. More court action is likely. But since the margin in the race is less than 0.5%, Pennsylvania law requires an automatic recount. That would begin on June-1st and wrap up by June-8th.
