A York County man has pleaded no contest to third-degree murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend. The District Attorney’s Office told the York Daily Record that 32-year-old Joshua Wertz of West Manheim Township does not admit guilt saying he was intoxicated at the time of the shooting. Instead, he acknowledged that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him. Police say Wertz shot 26-year-old Nicole Cash of McSherrystown while she held her 9-month old son. It happened in the basement of his father’s home on Sunset Drive back in October of 2019. According to court documents, the couple had been drinking when they began to argue about Wertz’s AR-15 rifle. The suspect says Cash grabbed the weapon and it went off. Wertz then woke up his sleeping father telling him “she reached for the gun and I shot her.” Wertz was sentenced from 18-to-40 years in prison.
