Lancaster County is home to roughly 20-million chickens and avian flu detected in an East Donegal Township flock has led to the elimination of 1.4-million birds at that farm. Lancaster Online reports that officials say the flu is most often fatal for the birds and depopulation, as it is called, is one way to stop the spread of the disease. The farm is owned and operated by Kreider Farms. A 10-kilometer-diameter quarantine zone has been set up to try and protect the 160-plus poultry operations surrounding the farm. The CDC says since this December, the outbreak of avian flu in the U-S has affected more than 27 million birds in nearly 30 states.
