Pennsylvania’s first positive case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in domestic poultry on a Lancaster County poultry farm has been confirmed by the state Department of Agriculture. State and federal officials say there is no risk to the public, and poultry and eggs are safe to eat, if cooked properly. But the avian flu is highly infectious to domestic birds like chickens and can be fatal. The positive samples were taken from a flock in East Donegal Township. The department has quarantined the farm and all commercial poultry facilities within a 10-kilometer radius. Officials say this is the first confirmed case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Pennsylvania in commercial poultry since 1983.
